An important representative of the shin hanga movement of the early twentieth century, Kawase Hasui (Japanese, 1883–1957) was inspired by European impressionism and incorporated Western elements into his paintings of traditional Japanese scenes. He sketched using watercolors as he traveled throughout Japan, and the skilled artisans at the printing studio of publisher Watanabe Shozaburo later transformed these into woodblock prints. Shin hanga prints were affordable because they could be mass-produced, and they became popular among Western collectors. This calendar presents twelve such prints.
