Born in Germany but raised in the United States, Gustave Baumann (1881–1971) supported his family as a young man by working for a commercial engraving house. In 1918 Baumann moved to the American Southwest, where he would become an integral part of the Santa Fe artists’ community. For more than fifty years he captured the crystalline light and rich colors of the landscape with affection, grace, and subtlety. This calendar presents twelve of Baumann’s woodcuts—self-contained, self-possessed small worlds that speak to the heart of simplicity.
