By the mid nineteenth century, concerns about traffic congestion in central London led to the creation of the Underground, today the third-busiest metro system in Europe. Artists and designers produced posters inviting the public to explore the Underground’s many destinations, both within London and beyond the city—historical sites, quiet gardens, royal parks, theatrical events, quaint villages, and more. Soon the Underground was established as an important patron of the arts and an acknowledged leader in the field of poster publicity. Twelve colorful reproductions of posters that once drew crowds to the Underground fill this calendar.
